Could Coutinho Be Set For Anfield Return?
By Dan Tracey
When you are a club that has won the Champions League, just how do you improve the squad that you already have? That is the question that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be asking himself over the course of the summer.
For the former Dortmund boss, there will definitely be need for some reinforcement at either end of the pitch, as both forward Daniel Sturridge and defender Alberto Moreno have moved on from Merseyside at the end of their respective contracts.
While, if a new forward and left-back are purchased during the transfer window, they will only play the role of plugging holes that have recently emerged and therefore not really getting the pulses racing of Liverpool fans around the globe.
However, the same cannot be said of the new target that has emerged on the horizon over the past few days and it is a player that not only knows Anfield very well, but will definitely have fans of the club clamouring for his arrival.
That’s because Philippe Coutinho has been heavily linked with a return to the team that he left in January 2018 and with his current employers Barcelona needing funds in order to engineer their own big money moves this summer, the 27-year-old is now edging out of the Camp Nou exit door.
After just a season and a half in Catalunya, it is fair to say that the Brazilian international has not quite lived up to the expectations that came with such a big money move and although his stint has not been a flop by any imagine, his talents are also viewed as expendable.
Although, it could also be that Barcelona’s own transfer activity plays a part in where the former Liverpool man ends up before the start of next season and it could also be his international teammate, that plays a part in transfer proceedings.
With Neymar being courted by Barcelona for a return of his own, it could well be that his compatriot Coutinho is used in a sweetener to help move the deal alone and therefore PSG and Barcelona swap their Brazilian personnel.
This is a move that will take a little longer to get going, due to the fact that Brazil are currently in Copa America and unsurprisingly the tournament’s hosts sole focus will be making sure they don’t fall in this weekend’s final hurdle.
Once this year’s Copa America comes to a conclusion, then a near frenzy of transfer activity will begin and this is where the biggest and best agents in the game, will do what they do best and that is engineer headline grabbing transfers.
With Coutinho now on record and saying he is open for a move away from Barcelona, this is the starting pistol for his agent to begin talks with the club and make sure a transfer comes to fruition. The end decision will be whether this mercurial midfielder chooses former club Liverpool or French giants PSG.
