Is David De Gea’s Head Currently Elsewhere?
By Dan Tracey
For someone who has always been considered as a safe pair of hands and for many, perhaps even the best goalkeeper in the world today, it has certainly been a spell of indifferent form for Manchester United’s David De Gea.
On his day, the Spanish international can be the difference between United picking up all three points or not and this was no less evident, than when he turned in a sensational performance against Tottenham at the start of the year.
The league fixture that took place at Wembley, was one that saw Mauricio Pochettino’s men throw the kitchen sink at the former Atletico Madrid shot stopper and although De Gea came under a heavy barrage, United somehow left the capital with all three points in their possession.
Fast forward to recent times and it is almost as if a different player is now between the sticks at Old Trafford, no longer is he earning United points, but he now seems to be the person responsible for dropping them instead.
He was very much at fault for the two goals that Pep Guardiola’s superstar outfit put past him in April’s Manchester derby and after that performance, the one thing he would have wanted to avoid was being in the spotlight just days later.
Unfortunately for De Gea, he would not get his wish and after spilling Antonio Rudiger’s long range effort, it was left for compatriot Marcos Alonso to prod home for Chelsea and ultimately earn the Blues a point on their travels.
These high-profile mistakes will ask a question not only of De Gea, but also of United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the former Norwegian forward, will now have to decide whether or not a change of personnel in goal is now merited.
It might well be that the stricken goalkeeper wants to just get to the end of the season and although that will offer the chance of a welcome break from the firing line, it could also offer up the chance of moving to pastures new.
Especially when you consider that De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes has reportedly had a meeting with the Manchester United hierarchy in regard to a new contract and has been told, that his client will not be receiving the same wage that Alexis Sanchez currently takes home each week.
This news has put the likes of PSG on red alert and although they have Gianluigi Buffon among their ranks, they know that the evergreen Italian cannot carry on a top level career forever and eventually the French giants will have to look to the future.
While, if the negotiations between De Gea and United reach an impasse – one that looks possible, due to a lack of expected renumeration, it means that the club will have a tough decision to make in regard to one of their key assets.
If their current number one is not willing to put pen to paper, then they will run the risk of seeing him depart for free at the end of the 2019/20 season and if a new deal is not forthcoming, then will the Red Devils decide to cash in on a player, whose stock is in danger of falling rapidly.
