Super-agent Jorge Mendes is one of footballs most lucrative agents, holding clients Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez and Manager Jose Mourinho. One of his other managerial clients is current wolves boss Nuno Espírito Santo, to which Jorge strong influence to the Midlands club have been questioned over recent months.
Wolves have been the standout team in the championship last season, after changing the manager and brining in exciting players from abroad, the majority of which have ties with Jorge Mendes. Most notably Ruben Neves, who has captained Porto F.C. at 18, chose Wolves over possible Premier league clubs.
Other clubs have questioned Wolves’ ability to bring in higher quality players with the help of Jorge Mendes. Wolves owners group does own a stake in Mendes’ business, suggesting a breach of FA rules of conflict of interest. However, the involvement has been cleared by he FA and EFL.
Although clubs may moan about the involvement of Mendes, nothing is stopping them going out and buying the players that they want, as-long as they all comply with FFP. With the correct recruitment, clubs can still compete to the same level as Wolves. I’m not sure clubs would still be complaining if the signings didn’t pay off for Wolves and they finished the season mid table.
There should be more clarity to what a agent can do with a club, so that all parties can understand what they can and can’t do. However the recruitment still needs to be correct in order to achieve success, and will be interesting to see how the newly promoted premier league clubs differ in their signings this season.
