Pogba Agent Ban Takes Another Big Twist
By Dan Tracey
In our previous article, we highlighted the news that one of the biggest agents in today’s game was handed a three month ban from all transfer activity. However, with it being handed out by the Italian authorities (FIGC), the belief was that it would be a domestic hiatus only.
Unfortunately though for Mino Raiola, he was dealt some incredibly bad news and that is the fact that his three month ban has been ratified by FIFA – a move that has a huge knock-on effect for the likes of Paul Pogba.
With Raiola not able to play any active part in this summer’s transfer window, it has thrown a huge spanner into the works and as far as Pogba is concerned, it could well scupper any hopes of a move to Real Madrid in the off-season.
Although the French international has been Manchester United’s best player in recent times, that is arguably a case of being damned with faint praise and the fact the Red Devils limped to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, speaks volumes.
With Huddersfield and Cardiff as their final two fixtures of this recently concluded campaign, many felt that they had the best possible opportunity in which to finish strongly and more importantly snatch a top four finish.
At the same time, it showed that football matches are not played on paper and with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men only picking up a single point in their last two outings, it has highlighted just how much of a rebuilding job will have to be carried out at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
A rebuilding job that some would believe, includes the departure of the 26-year-old Pogba and although he is more than capable of turning in good performances for his current employers, it seems as if his now persona non grata among United fans.
While you only have to look at the final day and the defeat to Cardiff for evidence of this, especially during what is now considered to be an incredibly ill-judged decision, to carry out an end of season lap of honour.
After that result, it would have been smarter for Pogba and his teammates to head straight down the tunnel. However, Pogba and others decided to stay for the expected adulation of the fans, instead they ended up getting short shrift instead.
Once recorded by multiple phone cameras, this was embarrassing footage that was shared all over social media and it was the kind of interaction, that could accelerate Pogba’s desire to leave Manchester for a second time.
That said, you cannot always get what you want and with Mino Raiola not able to play a part in any business until January 2020, it has added serious doubt to the hopes of the World Cup winner moving to the Santiago Bernabeu.
While of course, with the ‘super-agent’ having such an impressive roster of clients, its not just Pogba whose hopes of a move may be crushed and such stars as Matthijs De Ligt will also be rocked by FIFA’s ban extension.
With the Ajax defender turning heads all across the continent, a move to Barcelona seemed likely. Now though, his transfer status is as much up in the air as that of his fellow roster members and who knows just how the dust will settle once the new season begins in August.
